Restoring the Robert McDougall Gallery

The Robert McDougall Gallery is one of Ōtautahi Christchurch’s most significant heritage buildings and one of its most beautiful.

The redevelopment will see the McDougall restored and reopened to the public, displaying artworks from the collections of the Museum and other cultural institutions.

The first major task was to strengthen the Robert McDougall Gallery above ground to make it safe for contractors to work inside during the later stages of the redevelopment.

Cook Brothers Construction completed this work between January 2023 and early 2024. They have reinforced the building structure with steel frames and tied together sections of unreinforced masonry throughout the building. A temporary roof is protecting the Gallery during the works. This will be replaced towards the end of the project.
