The New Visitor Experience

The design and development of engaging and immersive exhibition spaces for the new Museum began before we left Rolleston Avenue.

Temporary exhibitions like Squawkzilla and the Giants were redeveloped with a view to displaying them again in the new Museum.

At the end of June 2025, we had 26 exhibition and visitor spaces progressing through various stages of design and three exhibitions ready to move into production. That means nearly half of our planned exhibition and visitor spaces are underway.

Many Museum favourites – like Fred & Myrtles’ Pāua Shell House and The Christchurch Street will return spruced up and in a new location – while others like the Antarctic Gallery and Discovery will be reimagined.

Most Museum staff are involved in the mahi (work) to create amazing interactive and immersive spaces for the new Museum.

We're looking forward to opening the new Museum in mid 2029.
